At-Home Hair Treatments

While self-isolating may be the best thing for the community at the moment, it can create some obstacles for the way you normally like to live your life. For example, if you are someone who loves to get haircuts, receive keratin treatments, and do other great things for your hair, you may be starting to worry about how self-isolating can affect that routine. Luckily, in today’s post, we will provide you with a few at-home treatments that you can do using items you might already have at home so that isolation won’t leave your hair a little worse for wear.
At Marie’s Beauty Salon & Supply in Anchorage, we care about the health and safety of our customers, which is why we have temporarily closed the doors of our hair salon and beauty supply store. However, we are still updating our website and providing you with helpful tips and advice in our blog so that you can still look and feel your very best. Continue reading below for a few at-home hair treatments, and once we’re all free to socialize, be sure to stop by our store!
Restore Moisture
It’s no secret that winter can be brutal on your hair. Dry, brittle hair is to be expected, but it doesn’t have to stay that way! There are a variety of great tricks that you can use to help restore moisture to your luscious locks.
Avocado
Avocados are naturally rich in fatty acids and minerals that can help restore shine to your hair while also smoothing frizz. If you have an avocado (or two) at home that are just going to waste, consider turning them into a hair mask! All you have to do is mash up a ripe avocado (without the pit) in a bowl. Then, add an egg to the mashed avocado and mix it together. Once you’ve created the mask, apply it to wet hair and leave it for 20 minutes, and then rinse it several times to ensure that all of the avocado is out of your hair. Repeat this hair mask once a week for damaged hair or once a month for healthy hair!
Olive Oil
You may think that adding olive oil to your hair will give it a greasy texture even after you’ve rinsed it out, but it can actually help add moisture. The great thing about this trick is that the only ingredient you need is olive oil, which is great for when you’re stuck inside and you don’t have any other ingredients to spare. Simply measure out ½ cut of olive oil and rub it into dry hair. After you’ve rubbed all of the oil into your hair, cover it with a plastic bag and wrap everything in a towel. Let the oil soak into your hair for 45 minutes and then shampoo and rinse your hair before styling normally.
Tame Messy Curls or Waves
One of the nice things about going to the salon is that the professionals know exactly what to do to tame your wild curls, whether it’s with a keratin treatment or a specific product. If you’re in need of your regular treatment or your favorite product just ran out, then you may be worried about how you’re going to deal with your curls until you’re allowed to go back to the salon. Instead of fighting with your curls to the point where you’re ready to reach for the scissors, consider defining your locks with a mixture of syrup and honey!
Honey and syrup are two ingredients that not only attract moisture, but they also lock it in tight, allowing you to treat your curls while providing them moisture that can help control frizz. To make this mask, you will need:
- ½ cup molasses or maple syrup
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 4 Tbs honey
- 2 bananas
- ½ cup water
- 4 Tbs lemon juice
- 2 Tbs all-purpose flour (adjust for desired thickness)
Mix together all of the ingredients listed above until there are no lumps, and warm the mixture on the stove. Separate your hair into four sections and evenly apply the mixture. Cover your hair with a shower cap and let the mixture sit for 45 minutes. Once the 45 minutes is up, rinse your hair thoroughly and style.
Itchy Scalp
An itchy scalp can be the result of a number of different causes, from dryness to more serious conditions such as psoriasis. To help combat an itchy scalp, there is only one thing you need — tea tree oil! This handy essential oil has antifungal properties and can help treat almost any scalp condition.
To get the most out of your tea tree oil, first drip three drops of the oil onto a cotton swab. Dab the swab on your scalp. If you find that undiluted tea tree oil is too strong for your skin, then we recommend mixing 1 ½ tablespoons of the oil into a cup of warm water and using that on your scalp as needed.
