The Causes of Oily Hair
When you have oily hair, it’s a result of the glands in your scalp producing too much sebum. Sebum is beneficial to the hair in that it helps keep your follicles healthy and provides your hair with a beautiful shine. However, too much sebum can leave your hair looking dirty and greasy, which is something nobody wants. With that in mind, there are a few different causes for oily hair, including:
- Heredity
- Unhealthy eating habits
- Medications
- Improper hair care
Another reason you may have oily hair is because you wash your hair too often. When your hair looks oily, your first thought may be to wash it, but washing too often could dry out your scalp, and your body may try to produce even more sebum in an effort to give your scalp and hair the hydration it needs. Additionally, you may be using products that aren’t right for your hair type, which could also cause your body to produce more sebum.
Instead of immediately reaching for the shampoo bottle, continue reading below for a few home remedies that you can try to help combat your oily hair.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is an ingredient that you should always have around the house, as it is helpful in so many ways, not just with recipes. In fact, you can even use apple cider vinegar to help restore the pH balance of your hair! If you’ve been using a lot of products in your hair, using hot styling tools, or even coloring your hair frequently, it could upset the pH balance, leaving you with dry or oily hair.
To help restore the pH balance of your hair and scalp, create a solution that is one part apple cider vinegar to eight parts water. Mix the solution well and then pour it over your hair. Leave the solution in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it out. Consider doing this once every week or so to ensure that your hair is as healthy as can be.
Only Condition the Ends of Your Hair
Believe it or not, but most people actually wash their hair wrong. Most people will apply shampoo and conditioner to their entire head before rinsing it out, but that’s not necessary. The ends of your hair are furthest away from sebum production, therefore they don’t need to be washed, as washing them could just dry them out. Instead, make sure to only wash your scalp and the roots of your hair, and when it comes to conditioning, apply the conditioner from the middle of your hair down so that it’s only applied to the areas that need it most. After all, your scalp is producing hydrating sebum, it doesn’t need more hydration than that.
Deep Clean With Aloe
Aloe may be your go-to when you get a sunburn, but did you know you can also use it in your hair? Fresh aloe vera makes a wonderful hair repairing mask, and it could be the solution you’ve been looking for! When applied directly to your hair, aloe can help reduce dandruff, promote hair growth, repair your scalp, and make your hair smooth and shiny — what’s not to love? You can use leaves from an aloe plant or buy aloe gel from the store. However, if you’re buying aloe gel from the store, avoid buying mixtures with added chemicals. Once you have your aloe, mix two tablespoons of the gel with a few drops of tea tree oil and apply all over your scalp. Massage the mixture and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it out. Repeat this process as often as needed.
Wash Your Brush
Most people brush their hair at least once or twice a day, but have you ever thought about what could be on your brush? Brushes should be washed regularly. However, most people don’t. As a result, your brush could be holding onto years of dirt and grime that you brushed out of your hair, depending on when you last replaced it. For this reason, if you’re struggling with oily hair, it could be because you’re using a dirty brush. Consider taking the time to wash your brush with a small amount of shampoo or a gentle soap to help eliminate any leftover dirt. If it’s been quite some time since the last time you replaced your brush, now may be the perfect time to consider buying a new one.
