Rule #1: Do Not Wash Your Hair More Than Two or Three Times a Week
Washing your hair only two or three times a week may not sound ideal, especially if you struggle with oily hair, but following this rule could help keep your hair soft and shiny. When you wash your hair too often, it could actually make your hair more oily. This is because your hair produces natural oils that condition and protect your hair, and every time you shampoo your hair, it strips away those oils. If you’re washing your hair too often, your body may go into overdrive trying to produce the natural oils needed to condition your hair, which can leave your hair looking oily. Washing your hair less often can prevent oil and even help your hair look better.
Rule #2: Avoid Hot Showers
When you do wash your hair, do your best to avoid hot showers. With that in mind, we’re not saying that you have to shower in freezing cold water for the sake of your hair, but showering in warm water as opposed to scalding hot water could do wonders for your hair. Water that is too hot could stimulate your scalp to produce more oil, while also opening up your hair cuticles and causing frizz. Instead, try washing your hair in warm water, and when you’re done rinsing out your products, rinse your hair in a blast of cold water to help close the cuticles and lock in moisture.
Rule #3: Be Gentle With Wet Hair
Your hair may seem strong and resilient when it’s dry, but when it’s wet, your hair is actually quite fragile. Unfortunately, many people are rough with their wet hair, which can actually cause more damage than you might think. When your hair is wet, it’s important to be gentle, starting with how you dry it off. Instead of rubbing it with a towel, it’s better to blot your hair gently to remove the moisture. If you want to go the extra mile, we also recommend using a microfiber towel or a t-shirt as opposed to a terry cloth towel, as the fabric of your bath towel can create frizz.
With damp hair, it’s also important to remember never to brush through your hair unless you’re using a brush that is specifically designed for wet hair. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb to help remove tangles, and always make sure you start at the bottom and remove tangles going up your hair instead of down.
