Cleanse

The first step for both a nighttime and a daytime skincare routine is to cleanse your skin. Depending on your skin type, you may wash your face twice a day or you may wash your face only once a day at a time that works best for you. If you want to make sure you’re eliminating as much dirt as possible, it may be a good idea to cleanse your face at night to eliminate any dirt or dead skin that may have accumulated during the day.

To pick a cleanser that works for you, it’s recommended to know whether you have dry, oily, combination, or normal skin. If you’re unsure what type of skin you have, check out part one and part two of this series to help you understand. Regardless of your skin type, it’s a good idea to stay away from cleansers that are scented or feel too heavy on your skin.

Tone

You may have heard the term toner a few times, especially if you’re researching what products to use for your skin. Toner is a great way to help balance the pH levels in your skin, add a layer of protection, shrink pores, and refresh your skin. Toner can be a miracle product for some, but it’s completely optional. If you do decide to add toner to your skincare routine, look for a product that does not contain alcohol, as that can dry out your skin.

Apply Serum

Serum is another optional addition to your skincare routine. However, if you do choose to add a serum to your routine, you can use it in both your daytime and nighttime routine. Serums are concentrated formulas filled with beneficial nutrients that can help fight signs of aging or damage from free radicals. Serums typically come in tiny bottles with a dropper that you use to apply the serum to your face. The lightweight formula allows your skin to absorb the serum quickly so that your skin can enjoy all the benefits.

Spot Treat

If you plan to go through your entire skincare routine at night, the next step of the routine is to spot treat for acne. It’s important to wait until you’ve already cleansed and your serum has had time to absorb into your skin. There are a variety of spot treatments available on the market, and it’s best to find the one that works best for you. In most cases, you will be required to leave the treatment on all night so that your skin has a chance to fight the acne before you wash it off in the morning when you begin your morning skincare routine.

Moisturize

As you may already know, moisturizing is one of the most important steps of any skincare routine, even if you have oily skin. When you cleanse your face, some cleansers can strip your face of its natural moisture, which can leave your face feeling dry and tight or even trigger excess oil production. Look for a moisturizer that is light and oil-free so that it won’t clog your pores. Depending on the brand you like, you may be able to find different moisturizers that are labeled as being for nighttime or daytime.

Protect

For those who plan to practice their skincare routine in the morning, it’s vital that you remember to add protection to your skin. Even if you don’t plan on going outside, you will need some form of sunscreen to protect your face from harmful rays. The great thing about skincare products is that many of them already come with SPF protection! Many moisturizers, foundations, and setting powders offer protection for your skin, and if you are someone who will likely forget to apply a separate sunscreen before leaving the house, it’s a good idea to find products that already have the protection you need.
